报告摘要:
Investigators at the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington have carried out several major sediment acoustics experiments, including the Sediment Acoustics Experiment ?1999 (SAX99) and the Sediment Acoustics Experiment 2004 (SAX04). In addition, the 2013 Target and Reverberation Experiment (TREX13) included comprehensive sediment acoustics characterization. These experiments were in relatively shallow water with a water depth of about 20 m, which allowed extensive diver activity at the bottom during the sediment characterization. The overall goal is to better understand propagation and reverberation in shallow water, and acoustic penetration into the sediment. Scientific issues addressed during these measurements, instrumentation used, and results obtained will be described.
报告人简介:
Eric I. Thorsos received the B.S. degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA, USA, in 1965, the M.S. degree in engineering and applied science from the University of California at Davis- Livermore, Livermore, CA, USA, in 1966, and the Ph.D. degree in theoretical nuclear physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1972.
From 1972 to 1975, he was an Assistant Professor of physics with the Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY, USA; from 1975 to 1980, he worked in the area of inertial confinement fusion with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA; and since 1980, he has been at the Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. He was the Chief Scientist for Sediment Acoustics Experiments in 1999 (SAX99) and in 2004 (SAX04). He is currently a Senior Principal Physicist (retired) at the Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington. His research interests include acoustic scattering from the sea surface and the sea bottom, and acoustic propagation and reverberation in shallow water.
Dr. Thorsos is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and received the Bronze Medal from the National Defense Industrial Association in 1999.
